Abstract

We present SMesh, the first wireless mesh network to provide seamless connectivity to unmodified 802.11 mobile devices. In SMesh, the entire mobility management is handled by access points that coordinate by using unicast, multicast and anycast to overcome the uncertainty related to client roaming. Mobile clients (laptops, PDAs, etc.) view the entire mesh network as a single, omnipresent access point. SMesh provides real-time handoff to mobile clients, both intra and inter-domain, allowing real-time application such as VoIP to work completely transparently while clients roam throughout the covered area. SMesh is fully functional, is currently deployed, and is freely available at www.smesh.org.
